Eyes in the Sky: Ruggedizing the Electronics That Locate UXOs, Mineral Deposits, and More
BURLINGTON, ON (September, 25, 2025) - A magnetometer is a device that measures the strength of the magnetic field at a single point. To detect spatial variations in the field, such as those caused by buried infrastructure or unexploded ordnance, gradiometers are used. These instruments measure changes in the magnetic field across space, typically by combining readings from two or more magnetometers placed at fixed distances apart.
Mounting gradiometers on UAVs has become increasingly popular as commercial applications emerge in sectors like mineral exploration, pipeline mapping, and geotechnical surveying. While modern use spans many industries, the original demand for UAV-mounted systems came from military applications.
Because these devices are totally exposed during flight, they must endure rain, humidity, dust, and physical shock from rough landings. A Canadian company is addressing these challenges by using epoxy potting compound to protect the sensitive electronics in their systems. This material offers exceptional resistance to (salt) water and humidity, strong adhesion to various substrates, and high compressive and tensile strength, making it ideal for protecting sensitive components in harsh field environments. Epoxy potting compounds like MG 832HD also provide a low dielectric constant, allowing the magnetometer to maintain good signal fidelity.
MG Chemicals is a proud supplier of high-performance epoxy potting compounds relied on by defence contractors across Canada. Our materials are built to endure harsh environments, ensuring long-term protection for critical systems.
