The Clear Choice: UV Adhesives for High-Performance, Rugged Optics and Weapon Systems
Burlington, ON, [March 24, 2026] — Canadian specialty chemicals manufacturer MG Chemicals announced today that its UV-curable adhesive is being used to support the design and manufacture of advanced electronic systems, including night vision goggle (NVG), weapon sights and fire control systems (FCS)—integrated systems of sensors, optics, and electronics that enhance aiming accuracy through automated targeting functions.
Designing high-performance systems for demanding battlefield environments requires careful engineering, beginning with material selection. UV-curable adhesives such as MG Chemicals’ UVLED82 provide several key advantages in the production of these systems.
One of the primary benefits is optical clarity. UVLED82 cures to a clear, slightly yellow-green finish, producing an almost invisible bond line. This makes it well suited for bonding lenses to housings and bezels, ensuring minimal interference with optical performance.
The curing process is highly controlled and efficient. UVLED82 is available in cartridge formats compatible with automated and pneumatic dispensing systems, enabling precise and repeatable application. Components are accurately positioned and rapidly fixed in place through UV exposure, with curing completed in seconds. In addition, these fully automated application and curing processes enable significant manufacturing efficiencies.
UVLED82 is also used for edge bonding electronic components, particularly larger or heavier integrated circuits and components. In weapon-mounted systems and helmet-mounted electronics such as night vision goggles, this reinforcement helps prevent component separation from printed circuit boards under mechanical stress from recoil, movement, and impact.
In addition to bonding, UVLED82 offers excellent versatility and manufacturing efficiency. It bonds effectively to a wide range of substrates, including metal, glass, and plastics, and can be used for encapsulation up to 5 mm thick. Selective encapsulation allows manufacturers to protect sensitive components and delicate sub-assemblies where needed most, providing robust protection with minimal impact on weight. This helps prevent failures caused by moisture, salts (such as sweat), and mechanical or thermal shock—common challenges in field-deployed equipment. With curing times measured in seconds, manufacturers achieve high throughput compared to traditional adhesive technologies.
By leveraging fast-curing UV adhesives such as UVLED82, manufacturers in the defence sector are enabling the efficient production of reliable, high-performance fire control and optical systems.
